摘要

本文旨在分析馬來社會在殖民與後殖民時期的社會變遷。論文假設殖民過程中異文化間的接觸,與馬來社會在傳統與現代性之間轉變關係密切。
本篇論文以《阿都拉傳》與《馬來人的困境》這兩份文本為研究對象,對照阿都拉與馬哈地所描述或批判的馬來社會,以瞭解馬來社會在西方殖民勢力入侵的變動過 程中,所受到新舊與內外相異文化的衝擊與影響。本文試圖依循殖民至後殖民的歷史脈絡,以「民族理論」與「新傳統理論」作為觀察馬來知識份子對當時馬來社會 的診斷。
論述的範圍,則以殖民初期與去殖民時期為焦點,對照《阿都拉傳》與《馬來人的困境》兩書,探討馬來知識份子如何看待處於傳統與現代之間的馬來社會及其所面臨的文化變遷;最後,透過變遷的民族認同,解析馬來知識份子建構現代馬來社會的方向與尺度。

Abstract

The purpose of this study, “Two Projects of New Tradtion: The Malay Society in Hikayat Abdullah and The Malay Dilemma” is to examine and analyze the changes of Malay society during the colonial and post-colonial periods. My main hypothesis is that the changes of Malay society have close connection with different cultures under the colonial process, and these changes are encircled the proposition of “tradition and modernity.”

Hikayat Abdullah and The Malay Dilemma are selected as the two objects of study in this thesis.The Malay society under the threads of colonial and post-colonial history was described and criticized by Abdullah and Mahathir. This thesis attempts to provide an explanation for the changes of Malay society. Under Western incursion, the process of the change of Malay society took place between “new and old” and “different cultural shock.” I also intend to explain the cultural meanings from the changes of Malay society in its historical context by the theory of “Nationalism” and “Neo-tradition.”

How intelligentsia responded to Malay society at that time in Hikayat Abdullah and The Malay Dilemma is the expounded ambit of this thesis. The result of this study will help understand the way modern Malay society is constructed..
